Q & A
Welcome to Sugar Owl Design! Below is information answering some of our most frequently asked questions. Email me with any others you may have: sugarowldesign@hotmail.com
Q: What is the turn around time prior to shipping?
A: All quilts listed on this website are in stock inventory, meaning they will be shipped within 1-3 business days.
Q: Are there more quilts available than listed?
A: The ready to ship quantities are updated. Higher quantities of many of the quilts are possible however, so feel free to ask!
Q: What size are these quilts?
A: Quilt sizes are listed in each description. Most of them are 40"x48", which make them an ideal size for a baby quilt or lap quilt child - sm/med adult.
Q: Do you make custom sizes?
A: Depending on my current workload, I do accept custom size requests up to twin size.
Q: Do you take custom orders to match colors or fabric themes?
A: Yes! I do many custom 40"x48" quilts. Email me and let's chat!
Q: Do you make anything that coordinates with the quilts?
A: Matching doll blankets, lovies, name banners, and wall kites are usually available to match your quilt purchase.
Q: What are the prices of larger quilts?
A: In my signature style of raw applique patchwork, large lap size (approx. 50"x64") is $249. Twin size (approx) 66" x 88" is $369. These prices do not include shipping.
Q: What do you mean by raw applique patchwork?
A: Most Sugar Owl Design quilts are raw applique patchwork. If you zoom in on a close up photo in a quilt listing, you will notice that the raw edge of the patchwork squares are exposed, rather than being sewn into the quilt. Beautiful texture results from the soft fraying of these edges. I love the look of traditional rag quilts, but personally find them too messy in the creation and upkeep. To me, raw edge patchwork is a good compromise since only 1 layer is exposed. Be aware, however, that if any little stray thread drives you crazy, this style may not be for you :)
Another interesting difference is that my quilt bindings are double layered and machine stitched for durability. The corners are squared, rather than mitered, as I have found longer durability with this method.
Q: What are your quilts made from?
A: I use high quality 100% cotton fabric from designer manufacturers such as Blend, Michael Miller, Moda, and Riley Blake Designs. I take care to select fabric that is not only beautiful, but also soft and appropriate for the love and multiple washes a quilt will have. I use unbleached cotton batting.
Q: Why are quilts expensive?
A: Quilts are definitely an investment. Sometimes the price can be shocking in such a disposable culture. Sugar Owl Design quilts have 3 layers of fabric, batting, binding, thread as well as several labor hours in the creation of each. It is wonderful that with proper care, quilts can be used and cherished for many years.
Q: Do you offer payment plans?
A: Yes. If you prefer to pay in installments, please email me, and I can send you a PayPal invoice which you may pay in installments at your own pace up until 3 months. Quilt will not ship until final payment is made.
Q: How do I care for my new quilt?
A: All quilts have been prewashed in a detergent formulated for sensitive skin so that they are ready to be snuggled by almost all upon delivery. The materials and the quilts are not exposed to pets or smoke during creation or storage. Subsequent washings in your home may be done by machine in cool or warm (not hot) water. The quilt may be machine dried on low heat. There will be some fraying. Threads can be carefully trimmed.
Q: What makes your quilts different from others?
A: While there are many amazing baby and lap quilts in the world, I find my raw applique technique, beautiful fabric selection and pairing, attention to detail and quality customer service set Sugar Owl Design apart.
Q: Where can I see more of your work or keep in touch?
A: I am available via a few platforms. While my ready to ship quilts are here, I have made to order quilts, banners, wall kites, fabric pinwheels, and even fabric by the yard on my etsy shops:
